Dreaming during a heatwave

It was the sun-scorched day

And you were wading through empty space

You said

This was a motion

Given to me in a dream

It was the medicine of the moment

As trees wore the scars

Of a heatwave

Another sign of the coming

Apocalypse

Another moment to grieve

As we read of dead fish

In over-heated rivers

Of elderly people

Whose blood boiled over night

Of cats in high rise apartments

Parched, lying in sinks under a barren faucet

Then you found the motion again

Hand dipping into the space before--

The space right here

We are already swimming in it

Sun and moon

The peaks of distant mountains

The roots of trees

The marina trench

And star-system cygnus

Swimming in it

When you realized that

In your dream

You were making a vessel

Gathering together hope

And tenderness, space to grieve

And become

Something new
