Earth Grief--Baby Penguins
Oceans rise up with our tears
Too many babies drowned
Heartbreak is courageous love
Everyone has their own light
Can you see it? Now,
As their bodies transform
Into the stars
This past summer I read an article about the Emperor Penguins, due to global warming and melting ice sheets, it was estimated that 90% of the baby emperor penguins died this year. How does the heart make sense of such death?
This painting was my heart’s organic response. The pain, grief, fear and confusion that arise in response to the on-going suffering and loss of life due to the climate crisis is incalculable. How can we let our hearts keep breaking? How can we find our way back to love? This is my prayer and my practice.
